Sarah and Craig — Milwaukee wedding photographer

Sometimes, I get jealous.

A couple Saturdays back, there were two things making me a little green: The bride’s wedding-day hair, and her maiden name.

First, the hair: It had flowers and curls, layers and wraparounds, side-sweeps and a whole lot of other pretty-hair-magic that I’m not explaining right, but to me, it was absolutely striking. You’ll see.

Second, the name: Sarah Love. Love is not her married name, and it’s not the name she’ll have for the next 65 years. But it was her maiden name, and I totally want to steal it. (Before you think I’m off my rocker, try forming a photography business name out of Derksen, or, bless Tommy’s wonderful heart, Gardner.)

When I received a phone call from Sarah’s mother a few months back, I felt a bit destined to shoot this wedding. Sarah and her then-fiancé, Craig — who live and work in Minnesota but had plans to marry in Milwaukee — encountered a bit of a complication with the photographer they had previously hired. Just two months before their big day, Sarah found herself thrown back into The Great Photographer Search. One way or another (uh hum thank you Don), she stumbled upon me — it was the only Saturday in June I still had open. After meeting in person and corresponding via e-mail, I felt totally at ease with jumping into a new couple so soon: Our senses of humor clicked, and I couldn’t wait to watch their day unfold.

Honest to goodness, there wasn’t one thing Sarah and Craig didn’t do “right.” Their timeline was impeccable, their organization was inspiring, and their love for each other was sweet and emotional.

The day started at Salon Nova in downtown Milwaukee — Sarah’s high school friend, Michael, is one of the owners. Wedding tip: Ladies, if you get ready in a pretty place, your getting-ready photos will be pretty as well. (Although Grandma’s basement may be the cheaper option, I thank you in advance for putting your photographer first.)

The first photo I’ll share is a detail shot of Sarah’s dress. You think it’s beautiful here? Just wait until you see it on. (No scrolling ahead, I’m watching you!) 🙂

Since Sarah’s hairstylist is one of her close friends, I made sure to get him in a few shots. Salon Nova is so modern and cool. One of the photos on the wall definitely caught my eye: I’m pretty sure the lady in the picture is looking at Sarah, thinking, “I wish it were my wedding day.”

Real flowers! Very classy.

Sarah and Craig planned on having the family photos taken before their wedding ceremony, so naturally, the couple planned a First Look. For anyone who isn’t entirely familiar, a First Look is where the bride and groom pick a private location to see each other for the first time. Usually, there are just three people present: The bride, the groom and the photographer. Although I’m a fairly traditional person, I absolutely LOVE these moments. They tend to be just as meaningful — if not more — than seeing each other at the start of the ceremony. It’s a bit more private than having the moment in front of a room full of people.

Here’s a photo of Craig just moments before Sarah arrived. His smile is about as real as they come …

One of my favorite things about walking around with a couple on their wedding day is listening to all the passersby. Everyone is so nice to a bride and groom on their special day. “You look beautiful.” “Congratulations.” “I love your dress.” The Art Museum is a pretty high-traffic place, but visitors are always willing to pause just long enough for me to snap a few pictures …

Someone taught the flower girl a very important lesson. 🙂

She was watching the guests as they arrived … pretty adorable. 🙂

But when the time came, the aisle was a little too intimidating. No worries sweetie, Mom will help!

When Sarah and Craig were reciting their vows, I looked over and saw Sarah’s parents holding hands, too. It reminded me once again how special of a day this is for the parents.

Sarah’s dance with her dad …

Followed by her first dance with Craig.

Sarah and Craig’s first dance was to a song played and sung by one of their friends. I can’t remember the name of the song, but I do remember it was totally beautiful. At the end of the song, they went over to give him a well-deserved hug.

At the end of the night, I went outside to say goodbye and saw one last photo: Craig was having a cigar with “the guys,” and received a light from Sarah’s dad.

Sarah and Craig, it was an absolute pleasure spending the day with you — I can’t wait for you to see the final edit. Best of luck to you both, and I hope our paths cross again!

On a personal note, it’s totally my birthday today. 21st, to be exact. OK maybe not 21st … 28th. EEEEEKKK. It’s been a wonderful day so far — Tommy and I are now off to celebrate! YAAAYYYY!! Happy Fourth everyone! Check back soon for more weddings and a newborn. 🙂
